CHANGE AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR LAWYERS

For our final session, we’ll focus on stories from lawyers who have been through change personally and in their organisations. We’ll have a longer session than usual (2 hours including lunch).

Ivan Kwok is doyen of the public sector commercial lawyers, having for many years led the legal team at Treasury doing the Crown’s major deals. He has a long term secondment into Justice to assist with policy and strategic issues. Ivan is a living illustration of the fact that it is never too late to make a career change.

Cathryn Bridge is the Chief Legal Advisor at the Ministry of Fisheries and a committee member of the Corporate Lawyers Association of New Zealand. She was awarded the Corporate Lawyer of the Year Award in 2002 for her contribution to her profession. Then in 2004 her focus was forced to shift away from her career with a diagnosis of cancer. Now back in the saddle in her role in the Ministry, what, if anything, has changed?

Julia Coleman (nee Black) was at Russell McVeagh then Crown Law, and has left to train as an Anglican priest. She’s happier than she’s ever been.

David Knight, Telecom’s General Counsel (NZ), is overseeing a big change in his team, as he adds many lawyers to his team and outsources less to private practice.

Larissa Cameron, is a solicitor with Wigley & Company, after many years as inhouse counsel doing IT/Telco/procurement work in the UK. She now balances working in private practice (from Christchurch) and enjoying her 2 young children.

Roger Palairet made the transition last year from Chief Legal Advisor, MED, to private practice, then returned on secondment into the Justice Chief Legal Advisor role.
