Although 60 per cent of the world’s population lives in Asia, only 16 per cent of Asians are reported to have access to the internet. The high cost of internet bandwidth remains the biggest barrier to the growth of broadband. How can this hurdle be overcome? How do the requirements of next generation broadband networks differ between emerging and developed countries and between urban and rural areas? What are the key issues around public/private partnerships and returns on investment? What policy and regulatory measures are needed to meet the requirements of ubiquity at affordable rates in an Asian context?
