Michael Wigley

Michael is the principal of Wigley & Company. He specialises in international and New Zealand IT, telecommunications, regulation/competition, public law/policy, and procurement. His work extends well beyond pure legal issues, into complex strategic policy and advice, often as part of coordinated activity.

As Chambers’ highly respected 2009 Global Guide to the World’s Best Lawyers notes

“Michael Wigley attracts praise as “a great person to work with - highly enthusiastic and dedicated to his work.” Acknowledged by peers as “the single best TMT [Telecommunications, Media and Technology] lobbyist in New Zealand,” he specialises in public sector procurement and is frequently instructed by the New Zealand government."

Michael’s clients include international and domestic Telcos, ISPs, IT companies, ICT users, public sector agencies, regulators, NGOs, etc.

He has over 30 years experience and is admitted as a solicitor both here and in England (having worked for the predecessor of Clifford Chance for 4 years). Michael started Wigley & Company in 1993 after being a partner at Phillips Fox.

Michael is president of the Technology Law Society, a member of the New Zealand Law Society’s e-Commerce Law Committee, the Institute of Directors, the New Zealand Software Association, and the English Society for Computers & the Law. He is a trustee of the charitable 2020 Communications Trust and the Fringe Arts Trust. He frequently presents at conferences in New Zealand and internationally.
